“Powerful”, “Compelling”, “A story well worth writing” – this is what people are saying about this honest, and sometimes brutal, true story of one man’s struggle growing up in the shadow of childhood sexual abuse. From his difficulties growing up, to his drug addiction, failed relationships, and struggles with parenthood, the author takes us through the ups and downs of a life spent in the shadows, trying to make sense of the events that formed the basis of his being. Sometimes tragic, sometimes hopeful, but never sugar coated, My Father’s Prostitute – Story of a Stolen Childhood takes the reader on an emotional ride which reminds us that the human spirit is more powerful than the demons that haunt us.

The Amazon page is up and can be found HERE. Although not yet available for purchase though that link, I would love it people would leave their reviews there. Amazon reviews are far more effective than reviews on any other site.
Still waiting for it to show up on bn.com, but I hope soon!

Regardless of where you purchase your copy, I would appreciate reviews on Amazon - those help spread the word far more effectively than reviews on any other site, and word of mouth is king!

An awesome 5 star review of My Father's Prostitute: Story of a Stolen Childhood:
"An excellent testimony to the devastating effects of child sexual abuse and the fight to bring back a fulfilling life in the aftermath. I hope therapists and 12 step groups around the country buy copies to read and think on as this book should be useful for such professionals and groups. Beautifully courageous to see a man stand up and talk candidly about sexual abuse. Thought provoking, sad, difficult subject matter for sure, this book is compelling and important. Steven gives a roadmap to healing and hope for other men (and women) grappling with the same loneliness and isolation that many survivors of sexual abuse feel. Bravo! This type of a story takes courage and heart to tell!"

The book was approved yesterday for release to Amazon.com, BN.com and all Ingram outlets. It is expected to show up in their catalogs in 6-8 weeks. Just in time for my original April release date (to coincide with National Sexual Assault Awareness Month).
Even better, it is now available on the Nook as of this morning!

There have been times when I have considered going and pulling the book. Times I've had second thoughts about putting it all out there like this. People have asked me "are you SURE you want to publish that? are you SURE you want people to know what happened?" and then I have my doubts. Maybe I should have held off publishing the book. Maybe I should have not included my full name. Maybe I should delete it all and hope that people don't notice it's gone.
Then I get an email. Then another. And yet another. Emails from people telling me how me telling my story has inspired them to find their voice. Emails that begin with "I've never told anybody this, but....". Emails that make me realize that despite the discomfort I may be feeling about releasing such a personal story, it is helping. It is helping people to realize they aren't alone. It is helping steer them towards healing. It is helping them to be understood.
And that is why I wrote it. And that is why I take a deep breath and move away from the delete button.

Somebody mentioned they thought they had heard about the book on NPR. I don't see how they could have, but it got me thinking so I submitted a press release today announcing the release. It still seems to be a touch subject - not sure the mainstream media will pick it up which is too bad - I believe the message needs to get out there so we, as a society, can stop shaming male survivors of childhood trauma.
